Re: HSR is loud

I thought I posted a message to this thread earlier, but somehow, it didn't make it to the board (most likely operator's error…).
Anyway, the article sounds very exaggerated to me.
Yes, a high speed train passing at full speed does make noise; mainly aerodynamic (unless with slab track, where the rolling noise does not get attenuated by the ballast).
I live not too far away from the HSL between Valence and Marseille, where the trains do run at 300 km/h, and I have one place where I occasionally take pictures. I am maybe 20 meters from the track when doing that activity. I have the impression that the noise level is lower than certain cars or trucks passing on the road, about 100 m away, and definitely less than from the quads running on the dirt race track some 200 m beyond the road.
It is a question of perception, and it is understandable that the people interviewed no longer have the quietness of the boonies (and then there are the farmers with their tractors…).
One thing is interesting, that the article reports the current situation, but nothing may have been mentioned during the construction phase, which definitely was louder…
As stated elsewhere, when a train passes at speed, you hear a raising noise level, then a few seconds constant, maybe with some variation caused by the rolling noise of the bogies, and then the noise dissipates.
So, if there is indeed an issue with the people interviewed, it could be that the noise somehow gets channelled, and they are directly in that channel. If so, a simple, even low, noise barrier would already help, or planting a hedge along the fence would do it too.
