Right, no automat. I guess that sort of proves what Bob Jochner had observed when interviewed by Fred Frailey for his book "Twilight of the Great Trains," i.e. that what SP was doing back then was more about cost control than discouraging ridership per se. In other words, if they'd really wanted to discourage people from using the Lark, an automat would have been substituted for a diner or coffee shop car before the first train-off petition in 1966.
