Never saw a "Bar". I was the hoghead on a crew that died on the 14 hour law so they turned us back by dead heading back to our home terminal.
We went to eat and I had a beer before we flagged down the train. Well, the the crew smoked so we had the fireman ride the hack "so he could see what train handling was like."
The 3 trainmen that were left got stoned and I didn't partake. About an hour later we were approaching a 30 mph curve, from 60mph and they started to get worried. We were on the trailing unit with a speedo and had a bunch of pig flats behind the power. I had turned on the headlight so they could see where we were. They got themselves so worked up, they wanted to pull the air. I showed them the air and the speed. We went right down to 35, went around the curve and got back to 60 mph. They finally went to sleep and I had to wake them in 2 hours to get off at our home terminal.
And, that is what happened. That's why I only smoked with a child hood friend where I would spend a vacation at Tahoe. I knew damn well I couldn't run a locomotive smoking dope.
Same goes for booze, but different. You lose your "seat of your pants" feeling of operating a train. Without that, you are screwed.
