Tony,
I went back and looked it up just to make sure. You never know with old timers. Here is what I found:
I had 2 years as an Engineer in the Army on Steam & Diesels, 67-69
I hired out for the SP in Engine Service on the Western/Coast in 1969. I was 22 years old.
Made my date as a Fireman was May 7, 1969 on the depot job in the City with Engineer Bullard on the 1823. I was 22 years old.
I was promoted on August 14, 1972. I was promoted to Passenger in 75 or 76.
I was 64 when I simi retired.
I did a little contract work training short line engineers on grade operation for a 2 years.
I am 70 years old so that figures out to be a bit over 42 years, at 44 years.
I let my ticket expire in 2013.

(I built my first 1.5 scale engine, with the help of Gordon Adams when I was 13. My last engine sits upstairs in the Museum in Sacramento. Its a 2-6-0 Live steamer I got got from Andy Clerci. I did a frame up restoration on it, new boiler, etc.
