Take a look at Signor's book
The EB track was the sole track, engineered by Hood, built by SP ca 1880. It is steep, hence the use of the 2-10-10-2s from Bagdad westward. Then the less steep track for WBs was added thru Klondike from Siberia- a touch of humor. That line was rebuilt as well- for the Superchief???? The slightly curvier and steeper grade exists close to the present one and just north of it. The fill at Siberia was deepened and lengthened to reduce gradient.
