The million-horsepower day

For an interesting goal in high-horsepower railfanning, it might be fun to try to hit a million-horsepower day.

You could do this on the west end of the Transcon, where there are plenty of trains, and the average train seems to have at least four units. (The average may be skewed a bit by the stack train I saw come off the A&C at Cadiz with 12 units...) Almost all the units were 4400 (with the exception of the Cadiz local). That gives 17,600 HP for a guess for the average, with the real average likely higher. At that rate, you only need 57 trains to reach a million horsepower. That seems doable, especially in summer with more daylight. (In fact, I may just have done it, but I can't say for sure since I wasn't counting HP on everything I saw.)

Other places this could work: Cajon Pass. The UP triple track across Nebraska. The Powder River Basin.
