The reliability of UP's reefer fleet has gone downhill over the past few years so shortages are the norm during the busy season.

Remember; the smaller (263,000) ones were rebuilt from the older Detroit Diesel powered ones by replacing it with a glorified truck reefer unit to extend their lives. Door problems as well as signs of rusting out of the carbody means their days are numbered as they fail.

The newer 110 and 111 series were purpose-built and have survived better but they're no spring chickens either and are showing increasing signs of failure mostly from the telemetry equipment.
