In the early 1980' s, I railfanned McCook crossing southwest of Chicago, where the Indiana Harbor Belt crossed the former Santa Fe mainline.
Whilst awaiting mainline trains, I was entertained by a 44-tonner working an aggregate pit just west of the diamonds. They were filling ex-ATSF hoppers with ballast rock using a large front-end loader. When a pair of hoppers were fully loaded, the locomotive and loader teamed up to move the cut of cars forward a couple spots. Essentially the GE took out the slack, while the loader got behind the last hopper and pushed!
Very entertaining. :)
