They had enough fuel to make it to Sparks on weekend freights quite often. Once they left commute service, it should have been simple to remove the divider between the fuel and water "sections" like on the GP40P2s.

I think what did them in was the Sacto SD45 rebuild program was winding down or moving on to Tunnel Motors, and the SP didn't want to bother with setting up a program for 10 odd ball units. A SDP45E would have been cool though....
