Espee's SDP - 45's had high - speed gearing and, for commute service, electrical modifications involving current feed to traction motors. Perhaps these differences were enough to keep them out of the Sacramento Rebuild program. Also, the SDP's would remain in Commute service until 1985 and the arrival of CalTrain F-40's and new cars requiring HEP, while at the same time the SD-45 rebuilding program was winding down, with only 24 units rebuilt in 1985 and a final 6 in 1986.
