Signal spacing was increased, replacing the electromechanical searchlights with electric.
There are more CTC islands now, such as Gaviota . A few [ well I know of one] spring switches are available.
But to add to your question, Salinas had "poor man's CTC" for the siding. That is, the DS could set an auxiliary signal to indicate 'enter siding'.
I wish I knew when that was installed, and when/if it was removed.
Even tho' the number of trains on the coast above Santa BArbara is a shadow of what used to run [with many sidings and open train order offices] the freights are long and running is erratic, making timekeeping , um, nominal at best. And a significant portion of delays are due to locomotive failures and grade crossing/trespasser hits.
