Here are two tru-isms: don't accuse a Canadian of being an Yank, and don't accuse a Kiwi of being an Aussie.
Regarding aticipating the crew's actions: if you anticipate incorrectly, two things can happen: someone or one of their bodily appendages will get crushed (fingers, toes, arms, legs, etc.), or they won't like your doing so and will send messages of disapproval, like making joints hard enough to knock you off the seatbox. You as engineer/driver follow their instructions (to the letter) because they are right there where the process is happening and you are many, many car lenghts away with a very limited view of what's going on. Remember what Sherrif Black Bart said in Blazing Saddles" "Do what he sayyy!".
