They do not even need to go to the Eel River Canyon to learn what the geology is there, and what they need to do to make a trail: educate themselves about the realities of trying to operate any mode of land transportation in the Eel River Canyon. They could listen to various experts who know a lot about that area, and what the SP had to go through to keep the line open. But those politicians obviously did not bother to try to educate themselves about that area. Not surprising at all.
