Back when the PLA had to move railcars to Niles Canyon by truck one of the regular guys we worked with for special moves was a house mover. He was able to move passenger cars cheaper than our other railcar movers. A typical move required removing the steps on the end where the semi-truck would carry it. Then the railcar truck on one end was replaced by a bogie and the other truck replaced by the semi-truck. The railcar trucks were then moved by a second semi that had a regular flat bed trailer (cheaper to hire than a low-boy).

I specifically participated in the moving of the Sacramento Northern boxcar from a private residence in the Berkeley Hills. It was cool to see how they did it. It had to be lifted, shifted sideways and turned 45 degrees before it could go on the truck. They cribbed it up, put it on a special heavy duty dolly that rode on top of the cribbing and put it in a position where the truck could get under it. They did it cheaper than renting a crane and didn't damage any of the surrounding trees. It was fascinating to watch.
