That was back in the day when engineers were able to go over the speedlimit when safely possible to make up time. A lot of the time 5 or 10 mph over the posted on straight stretches could get you back on schedule. Everyone knew what time they should pass a certain point on the railroad and if you were a minute off compensate as necessary to make it up. Then officials got radar guns and screwed everything up.
