Those are essentially city pairs where the airports are quite a bit away from the city centers.

For London - Paris, I am sure the author looked at connections via LHR - CDG; things might be a bit closer if he looked at LCY - ORY.

Other city pairs which were not mentioned (note, the differences are not verified):

• London - Amsterdam (but not Amsterdam - London)
• Paris - Strasbourg
• Lyon - Frankfurt
• Zürich - Milano
• Paris - Marseille
• München - Berlin
• München - Erfurt
• Wien - Salzburg

In one point, the article is wrong: The longest high speed train run in Europe is London - Marseille (and it may actually not be that much slower than by plane, considering LHR; and getting from Marignane to Marseille can be a pretty bad mess).
