Another bell question

On diesels with pneumatic operated clappers, can the rate of the chime be adjusted? On most western roads, I've noticed the bell claps about every 1-1.5 seconds. Some eastern roads had bells that chimed in a much more rapid rate (which I don't care for). Was this a different model or can they be adjusted?
