There are two different bell ringer motors. The old Prime ones are single-acting and generally fairly rapid in their ringing rate.

Most have switched over to Graham-White Salem double-acting ringers which have a slower rate. Their electronic bells have about the same rate.

It's fairly easy to switch between the two kinds of bell ringer motors, though the pistons are different diameters so the older collars have to be drive out or replaced to put a newer one in.
