There are a lot of good explanations of personal opinions on why TRAINS magazine has fallen in stature. I first subscribed in April, 1960 and am still a subscriber. I have collected every TRAINS issue but two before that date. The railroad hobby has changed and related railfan activities and publications have changed too.
It used to be easier for railfan magazines to receive prospective articles for possible publication. For many of the reasons previously mentioned the number of authors seems smaller, the railroads more bland, and a tendency to cover more of the "limited non-fan based" subjects are partly to blame.
When I first subscribed you were often rewarded with articles about unknown to you railroads and operations. Now you get on the Internet and can find just about anything you're looking for. If you don't know it, someone else can help you.
David P. Morgan was a great editor/writer and I miss how he could connect with the railroad company and the railfan. While I do look forward to each issue of TRAINS, I find myself more anxious waiting for CLASSIC TRAINS in my mailbox.
