In my view the main issues w/nuclear are two--spent fuel/contaminated components of decommissioned plants, and far worse, the apparent inability of US contractors of building a safe plant. The latter stems from, the building of Diablo Canyon in mirror (guys couldn't correctly read the plans), poor assembly issues causing abandonment of incomplete plants (see We Almost Lost Detroit), the faulty overhaul of the SCE plant, and many others.
As to the French, look back a few years at the "poached fish" caused by the "cooling water" effluent from some oftheir reactors during heat waves.
Looking further back, it is clear that the "civilian, peaceful" nuclear officials colluded withthe military in suppressing news of radiation releases, contamination issues surrounding both defense and civilian facilities, "nuclear accidents" etc. They have so compromised their integrity that I don't trust any of their claims.
Rail content, we are in the midst of major changesin our infrastructure which will disrupt many of our "established, mature" industries. Unitcoal trains will decline, hopefully oil the same. I am optimistic that with enough solar PV and better storage media, most of us will have drastically lower utility bills, YAY! As to re-roofing issues, yes that will be an issue, but not insurmountable. I desire/expect the Class 1s to wake up andstringcatenary. We'll see if I am right or wrong.
