Often times a train will be held outside Cascade Tunnel while the tunnel fans are clearing out the exhaust gasses from a previous train. The tunnel is on a 1% + grade for Eastbounds, so the freights have to work throttle through the bore. The process can take up to 40 minutes, depending on the prevailing winds at the time and the direction of the previous train. BNSF doesn't want to gas any passengers...
