As mentioned by a post above it was not coal but imported coke going to Geneva Steel in Utah. It probably was early morning. Our family used to stay at Tahoe for a week in the summer, and I would sneak out before sunrise to drive over to Truckee and chase a few trains in the nice morning light, and be back to play in the lake with the kids before lunch. It was a nice family vacation, I got a few train pix and the wife and son got to sleep late.
