A glimpse of GE Transportation’s past — and perhaps its future — was on display Tuesday during a media tour of the Erie plant.
Yevgen Kravtsov, acting chairman of Urkanian Railways, the largest freight railroad in Europe, traveled more than 5,000 miles with his team to visit Erie and to inspect his latest purchase.
Kravtsov was in Erie to smash a bottle of Champagne over the front coupling of a new locomotive, the first of 30 that will be built in Erie as part of a $1 billion order with Ukraine that includes an agreement to modernize existing locomotives and to build 195 more locomotives in Ukraine.
It wasn’t like he was in town to pick up the keys to a new sports car. The TE33A locomotive, which is expected to be hauling loads by fall, is a 12-cylinder, 4,500-hp freight locomotive that’s expected to replace two old locomotives for every new one put into service.
