Treasury of 50's San Francisco Railroad Pictures

These are from the U.S. President's Railroad Commission Photographs held at Cornell University. [digital.library.cornell.edu] The photograph collection was generated by an effort of railroad unions to keep two men in the cab of an engine--engineer and fireman--in the wake of the transition to diesel, particularly in yard work.

Following are some highlights:

Quint Street near Evans. This was the old stockyards area, "Butchertown", but at this time was in transition to postwar industries.

This is a view of the ATSF-SP Illinois Street tracks crossing the WP's yard lead at 25th Street. Train is headed toward Mission Bay yard.
