It's suppose to be a train site, but since someone asked about the previous LA double-deckers, SCRTD had purchased 25 in the early 90's for use on high volume routes, like Wilshire.
UTU (which represented SCRTD's drivers) was opposed to Doubles and Artics as "unsafe". The double-deckers had an "incident" where a driver took it "off route" and hit a tree limb. SCRTD pulled them out of service, for (IIRC) a year.
When we were preparing for the 84 Olympics, SCRTC said that they wouldn't have enough busses, so one of the Board Members put together a list of equipment. It was noticed by this Board Member, that we had these 25 essentially brand new double-deckers "out of service", and he dared to ask why?
The Board Member was told by SCRTC management that the double-deckers were "unsafe" because a driver had taken one "off route" and hit a tree limb with it. The Board Member then wondered out loud if maybe the problem wasn't an "unsafe" bus, but maybe an "unsafe" driver, who ought to be fired, rather than take millions of dollars of brand new busses out of service.
