With these brass tagged DS-24 brake valves, first service became maintaining which was accomplished by merely plugging a port in the rotary valve seat, which converted them to DS-24-M, and "full release" was disabled, except for the warning port. The SP wasn't the only RR to make this conversion.
WABCo sold a maintaining feature which was an add-on and used lap as maintaining. I encountered a few of these on some of the 2700s/1400s (the SD-7s), and I bet dollars to doughnuts they were traded out over the years for the plugg-ed port version because of its extra cost of purchase and maintenance.
