PCS switch on old units is on the brake pipe, newer units it is operated by the A-1 charging cutoff pilot valve and engineer's brake valve.

Basic operation is that if there is an emergency brake application it drops out the excitation and resulting generator traction output and the engine speed goes to idle. There may or may not be a delay, and sometimes the dynamics might or might not drop out.

The PCS is part of the PCR (Pneumatic Control Relay) circuit though other things can also interrupt the PCR.

It is generally a good idea for it to work as it is a safety device. The FRA also has a basic rule "If equipped must be maintained."
