Not to muddy the waters here but I believe that the Pinnacles are part of a formation that broke off from the southern +CA area and moved north thru the plate tectonics action, fault movements etc. If you take the geologic tour of Point Lobos you will find that 50 million years ago it was actually part of the Mojave desert. So yes, the Pinnacles probsbly started out near the grapevine.
