Casualties of the "highway interests" could include the IER and the NWP, done in by road bridges, but the SN was killed by SP and its Benicia bridge.
PE was doomed by the horrid last coupla miles from Macy Street to 6th and main and to an extent by the Arroyo Seco Parkway. There were some impressive viaducts like Soto St and La Cienega both joined to LA by street running.
