Thanks for the links. When you get down to the basic premise, they're both the same: using friction to create the temperatures necessary for welding. Spot welding (lightweight Budd and Pullman/P-S passenger cars) is very similar in concept to friction stir welding: extremely localized heating, except that it uses electricity instead of friction.
