One thing I don't get is that Caltrain is currently running only 3 trains a day in either direction down to Gilroy...is there really a demand for them to go further south when they're hardly running as it is?

Also: " One Salinas city councilmember last week said that Monterey officials would also be reaching out to Union Pacific as a possible provider of the new passenger service, but the railway stopped all of its passenger trains in the U.S. in 1971."

Umm...yeah, that's not gonna happen.
