Car Inspectors ( " TOADS " ) at freight & passenger yards were responsible for inspecting the journal boxes, as well as brake shoes, air & steam lines and any loose or shifted loads. My grandfather was a Toad for Delaware, Lackawanna & Western & Erie Lackawanna for many years, walking the trains in whatever weather presented itself in Scranton, PA. BTW, Erie " Lack 'o Money " was still buying new freight cars with friction bearings right up to the 1968 AAR deadline; they were cheaper than roller bearings.
