I've seen the Soviet maps of the Bay Area. Not particularly accurate, but then they were based on satellites and spies when they could have just bought USGS or AAA maps.
As for going farther back in time for trolley lines (whoever did these maps apparently took a fairly expansive view of what was a "streetcar"), it gets harder to find the data. As shown, even for 1957, by the errors Dragoman noted. Even for more recent periods, until US DOT began collecting and publishing GIS information about the systems they funded (first appeared in the 1990s, and not really complete until the 2000s), it would be difficult to get a complete picture.
