Does Caltrans have the $500 million to add another track over Beaumont, yet?
Just because this is a "placeholder" in the Caltrans, Division of Fail, State Rail Plan, it doesn't mean it will really be any kind of Caltrans project.
The Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) will probably have to find the funding for this, and since RCTC has joined the LOSSAN JPA, and both commute and IC needs have been identified in that corridor, LOSSAN and ML would "fund" and "operate" proposed services.
LOSSAN IC service, with direct through train connections to San Diego, is also being explored to North LA County on another proposed LOSSAN "branch", and direct Santa Barbara to Indio (all via LAUPT, which will be a run-through station, by 2056, if we don't repeal the funding source).
Think of this as just one more of these awful "incremental" projects and services, that actually would meet our real travel needs, in congested travel corridors, that we could easily be building, with just the cost overruns on the CHSRA"S "runaway money train".
