It's worth noting that quite a few mostly first generation diesels used in logging service and on some shortlines blessed with lots of curves were equipped with water tanks feeding rail washers. California Western, Rayonier, and others had the tanks mounted on the walkways; others had water tanks mounted outside the fuel tank below the frame; Feather River Railway draped water tanks over the roofs of their Alco and EMD switchers; and McCloud River Lumber Company had a wooden water box mounted on the top of its GE 70-tonner. Many more that did not put rail washers directly on the diesels instead rigged up water cars used with the diesels, that could be used as fire cars in addition to rail washing.
