August 20, 1979, I boarded the Westbound North Coast Hiawatha at Billings station for the beginning of my first long distance train trip. Overnight on the Hi to Seattle, with Budd domes, dutch doors, and steam heat. Then a quick transfer at King St. Station to the Southbound Coast Starlight, bound for Los Angeles. This time with an ex - Santa Fe Pleasure Dome, lunch counter diner, and more steam heat. The NCH would be killed off 2 months later in the Carter Cuts...
