Too bad Ms. Schaff and associates were not around in 1948 or so when everything electric was being ripped up and out and replaced with diesel.
Of course internal combustion "mobility" was all the rage then and I believe the Mayor of Oakland is a trendy sort and would have drunk the same AAA and General Motors and National City Lines koolaid that Mayors Lapham and Robinson and Christopher did. Conformism is a powerful force amongst politcians and it almost did in the cable cars(electrically operated too).
