Catenary heights

Trains that operate through the Channel Tunnel in Europe but also operate on the regular European rail network have special dual range pantographs. The Chunnel has higher catenary because of the vehicle carriers used to ferry both cars and trucks through the tunnel.
At the point where the standard catenary transitions to the higher Chunnel catenary, there are wayside radio beacons that reset the dampers on the pantographs allowing them to operate in either the higher or lower range as applicable.
