About 30% of the population is for him no matter what he does. This is not a matter of intelligence but rather tribalism. He is their guy and "one of us" against the "other". We now have a situation where people believe that those of differing beliefs are not wrong, but evil. At least we aren't burning at the stake any more.

There was a recent historical study of the last 140 years that showed that for ten years after each crash of the economy there was a move to the far right. Arguments then ensued as to whether or not today's situation is different. We will have to wait for 2020 to find out.
