SMART - DMU and EMU questions

Question about the SMART train - realize each locomotive has a Cummins diesel. Are both engines used - or is just the one diesel used for the front DMU depending on the direction the train is going?

Second what would be the cost of electrifying SMART? Diesel seems to be getting a bad rap frmo the greenies in Marin right now.

Can't SMART inexpensively switch those DMUs to be EMUs - for how much? Opponents seem to dismiss this as a very expensive option.

With Nippon Sharyo out of the US will this make it harder? Would SMART need overhead lines - how much would that cost for the overhead lines (ballpark)?
