The California Coastal Commission’s approval of a new 10-foot multi-use path on the San Lorenzo trestle bridge clears the way for the city of Santa Cruz to bid the project.

The wider walkway, to be made of steel with fiberglass decking, is part of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail and will replace a 4-foot wooden walkway next to the 1905 railroad bridge. Vertical steel posts and horizontal steel cables will replace the chain-link fencing in place.

The goal is to improve access to the beach for people on foot and on bikes coming from the Seabright neighborhood.

The city aims to have the new path ready by Memorial Day weekend. Pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured to the nearby Riverside Avenue Bridge during construction, which is expected to take 30 weeks.
