GN's original line through Kalispell to Libby went over Haskell Pass, basically the route of today's US2. It was a headache for GN due to bridges and curves, expensive to maintain.

The switcher in Whitefish is a rare EMD NW3. Only 7 were built, all for GN. They were intended for branch line passenger trains. There is a steam generator just forward of the cab. You'll notice it has Blomberg road trucks. At the time it was built it was an early attempt at a road switcher.
