Coal still lives....? Two interesting opposing views, and now a third....

It is no "secret" that China is building new coal fired plants that are at least much more efficient and have more controls on emissions.

China has gone from being an overpopulated starving third world country to a modern economy, in about 40 years, lifting the standard of living of a billion people, using all of this "evil" modern technology, that many of us thoroughly spoiled (but actually very fortunate....) Americans take for granted, and assume is our "right"

China will apparently will not now be buying much lower sulfur/higher btu American coal exported by RR's to burn in these new "cleaner" coal plants that they are building, to reduce NOx and SOx emissions, and reduce (albeit only slightly) CO2 output (higher btu per unit of emissions produced). So much for those "clean coal" jobs, I guess.... It seems that we have managed to screw that possibility up, with a trade war, without any help at all from from self styled environmental types or the Nimby's standing in front of the "evil" trains bringing to the ports.

of course, China is also investing billions in new hydro, and billions in wind, solar, and battery storage technologies. They are investing in significant upgrades to their rail networks both freight and passenger. And, as they are developing, China's rate of GDP increase, is (as has been the case in CA for 20 years), is exceeding is increase in power consumption, and they are increasing the rate of renewable electricity production, and retiring older Soviet/Maoist era coal plants, at a much faster rate, than they are building new coal fired power plants.

So, on one side of this debate, this interesting bit of "NGO" information is both true, while at the same time, being wildly misleading.

And, on the other side of this debate.... Coal is now well over twice the price per equivalent btu than natural gas, without many of the secondary costs, and 2/3's less CO2 emissions. So, unless we enact a plan to "force" competitive (non coal "producing" utilities, there are handful of those) power producers to buy coal regardless of price, and not allow them to convert to gas, and force their monopoly consumers to pay higher prices for electricity to subsidize it (as DOE is apparently proposing...), "in the long run" coal fired electrical production in a truly competitive "free market" economy is still likely to be a dying industry.
