Helpers require 2 man crews, DPUs none
Before ATSF did DPU it did use remotes a little. There may have been issues in the Tunnels.
Then it put a single unit on the rear over Tehachapi with an engineer. That engine stayed on for the full trip account not being able, by safety or workrule to be cut off at Summit
