In the run-up to Expo '74 in Spokane, which was held mostly on Havermale Island in the Spokane River, the GN Depot and joint UP / MILW Union Station were demolished, along with most of the GN Right of Way through downtown. BN was not sorry to see it go, as the many grade crossings, curves, and bridges over Spokane River and Latah Creek made this route inferior to the elevated ex - NP line through Spokane. As well, the GN line through Scotia Cyn. between Newport and Chattaroy, Wa., was inferior to the NP " Funnel " line from Spokane to Sandpoint via Rathdrum & Athol, ID.
