You shouldn't have skipped that civics class. We elect representatives to make laws, pass taxes etc. This is why the US is called a representative democracy, a republic. The argument with the British was because we weren't allowed to elect members of parliament, but parliament could - and did - tax us.

What are they teaching in grammar school these days?
