From the book SP Passenger Trains Volume 2 - Day Trains of The Coast Line, by Ryan & Shine, on page 147 there appears a photo of SP 4460 and the following : " The 4460 was one of two Sacramento Division locomotives designated for special train service between the late 1940's and mid - 1950's. It was one of the locomotives used for President Harry S. Truman's campaign special during 1948, and it remained the featured Northern assigned to the ' Last of Steam ' runs over the Sierra's. As a matter of fact, its' last run was on an excursion round trip between Oakland and Reno on October 18 & 19, 1958. "
It was likely assigned to special train service due to it being the newest ( i.e. - lowest mileage ) GS - Class locomotive on the system.
