Spengers played a huge roll in myself becoming a railfan. Grew up in the east bay area and my father worked in Emeryville. I can remember vividly many dinners at Spengers in the 1950's. Always ordered abalone and was it tasty! Often after dinner we would walk over to the Berkeley station and watch what ever came by. SP always put on a great show with the end of steam and new diesels. It was a classy show at that time. Even have a photo my dad took of my mom, brother and I standing in front of #102 City of SF with one year old Alco PA 6005 in immaculate daylight paint. The 6005 was built the same month I was born! Needless to say so many wonderful memories of Spengers and the SP in Berkeley. More recently my wife and I would make regular trips to Spengers riding a Capital train out of Davis. Sad news.
