Cool video. The poor NW-2 either has injector or piston ring issues in the rear bank of cylinders. The hissing noise sounds like a leaking flash cock to me. These are rudimentary compression releases that allows any collected moisture in the cylinders to be blown out when starting. There is a flash cock for each cylinder that must be opened and closed manually. Sometimes the flash cock seat gets damaged causing it to hiss every time the cylinder goes into compression. Woe to the person who decides to not open the flash cocks when starting one of these older EMD's, especially if its been sitting a while. If there's any moisture in any cylinder, usually from leaky seals, you'll "hydro" (bend) a rod pretty quickly. Then you'll wish you had taken the time open the flash cocks...…
