The UP #849 will be returned to running condition with a new turbo when it arrives at the WRIX yard. They don't sell very often(due to their odd look) but I kind of have an affinity for them so we try not to scrap GP30's unless they are not economically viable to repair.
As far as modernizing the locomotive, it is absolutely necessary as the GP30's and GP35's had the worst electrical systems ever put out by EMD (followed closely by the SD50). So in order to get them to sell, we install dash 3's, giving them a second life.
I realize the SD9's with high noses are neat looking but in order for the SD9's to not be scrapped railroads and industries demand they have their noses cut for vision and safety purposes. There are a few more pictures of the #4404 SD9 on the Western Rail Facebook page.
One last thing the engine in the #849 is a 16-567D3a. the builder's tag is kind of ambiguous but the reason I am absolutely positive of this is the turbo. The 645E engine has a larger model-597 turbo and the 567D engine has the smaller model-440 turbo. The #849 has a 440.
In addition, the reason there is no doubt whatsoever is WRIX purchased the two DD40 645 engines back in the 90's from Portola and John Holm, the FRRS president at the time.
Looking forward to the #849 getting on its way soon
